How to open and edit a PSD online

A PSD is more than a picture. It can hold layers, masks, text, effects and settings that belong to a particular editor. Photostr opens PSD files in your browser, so you can inspect the layers and make an edit without installing another app.

Start with a copy

Keep the original PSD somewhere safe. Open Photostr, choose Open from computer, and select the file. You can also drop it onto the editor. Its contents stay on your device.

Find the layer you want to change

The Layers panel lists the parts of the document. Use the eye beside a layer to check what it contributes. Select it before painting, moving or applying an adjustment. If the layer has a mask, click the image thumbnail to edit the picture or the mask thumbnail to work on what shows through.

Save an editable project before exporting

Choose File → Save to download a .pxed project. This keeps the document data Photostr uses for further editing. Choose File → Save as PSD when you need a layered PSD, or File → Export As for a finished PNG or JPEG.

What stays editable in a PSD?

Photostr can exchange pixel layers, groups, masks, opacity, blend modes and many adjustments and effects. Its own text and shape layers currently export to PSD as pixels. Some imported Photoshop descriptors are kept while their source pixels remain untouched, but that does not make every imported feature editable in Photostr.

Will it look exactly like the Photoshop file?

Not always. Complex masks, effects, colour profiles and high-bit-depth files can differ. Photostr currently works with 8-bit layer pixels and an sRGB working space. Compare the finished export with your original before sending it to a client or printer.

Can I edit a PSD without paying for Photoshop online?

Photostr's current tools are free and require no account. It is a separate application, so choose it for the editing tasks it supports and keep the original PSD for features that require its original editor.
