Privacy policy
Photostr is a free photo editor that works in your web browser. We designed it so your pictures stay on your computer, and that idea runs through everything on this page. Here's what we collect, what we don't, and the choices you have.
Who we are
Photostr is run by KamranAli Limited, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 13008281), with its registered office at 12 Constance Street, London, England, E16 2DQ. KamranAli Limited is responsible for the personal data described on this page, which makes it the data controller under UK data protection law. The easiest way to reach us is support@photostr.io.
Your photos and designs
When you open a picture in Photostr, your browser reads it from your device and the editor works on it right there. It isn't uploaded to us or to anyone else. The same is true of everything you do with it: layers, text, masks, exports and saved projects. We don't have a copy, so we can't look at your work, lose it or give it to somebody else.
What stays in your browser
A few things are kept in your browser's own storage on this device to make the editor easier to live with:
- an autosave of your open documents, so a crash or a closed tab doesn't wipe out what you were working on
- copies and thumbnails of recent files, so you can reopen them with one click
- your preferences, colour swatches, brushes, actions and brand kits
None of it is sent to us. It sits there until you delete it, and you can clear the lot at once by removing this site's data in your browser settings. That clears autosaves too, so save a project file first if there's something you want to keep.
AI tools, fonts and the clipboard
Background removal, subject selection and upscaling happen on your device as well. The first time you use one of them, your browser downloads the AI model from our site and stores it for next time. If that download doesn't work, the editor may fetch the background removal model from Hugging Face instead, and Hugging Face will see your IP address for that request, just like any other website you visit. Your picture is never part of it.
The fonts that come with Photostr are served from our own site. If you pick More in the font list, Chrome or Edge will ask whether Photostr may see the fonts installed on your computer. That list is only used to fill the menu, and it stays on your device. Photostr reaches your system clipboard only when you copy or paste.
Usage analytics
Google Analytics helps us understand how Photostr is used: which tools people choose, which features they open, which templates they start from, and which file types they open and export. Those numbers tell us what needs fixing and what to build next. What we send Google are short, fixed labels like "brush" or "exported PNG". We never send your images, file names, document names, anything you type or anything you search for.
Google also gathers some information by itself when the analytics script loads: your IP address, which it uses to estimate your country and city; your browser, device and screen size; your language; the pages you visit; and a cookie called _ga holding a random ID, so it can tell when you come back. We set that cookie to expire after 180 days. Google signals and advertising features are switched off, and we don't use any of this to show you ads or build a profile of you. Google processes the data under its own privacy policy, and it may be stored on servers in other countries, including the United States.
Analytics is on by default in most countries, and you can turn it off at any time. If you're in the EU, the EEA, the UK or Switzerland, it stays off until you say yes. We only ask once, with a little card after your first export, and if you miss it, nothing changes. To work out where you are, we use the country Cloudflare detects for your connection, or your device's time zone if that isn't available. Whatever you choose is remembered in this browser.
You can also open the editor and choose Help, then Usage privacy. Ad and tracker blockers stop analytics too, and so does Global Privacy Control if your browser sends that signal. When Photostr is embedded in another website, analytics doesn't load at all.
Hosting
Photostr is hosted on Cloudflare. As with any hosting service, Cloudflare processes your IP address and some basic details about each request to deliver the pages and protect the site from attacks. We don't use those logs to track anyone down.
When you email us
Send Feedback, Report a Bug and Email Us, all in the Help menu, open your own email app with a message addressed to support@photostr.io. We get your message and your email address and, if you tick the box, details about your browser and screen that help us find bugs. We use them to reply to you and to improve Photostr. We won't add you to a mailing list or send you anything you didn't ask for, and if you ask us to, we'll delete your messages.
How long we keep things
Analytics reports are kept for as long as they help us plan, and detailed event data for no longer than 14 months. We keep your emails while the conversation is still useful and delete them when you ask. Anything saved in your browser stays there until you clear it.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to get a copy of the personal data we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, to object to how it's used, and to take it elsewhere. Since there are no accounts and we never receive your pictures, there's usually very little to hand over, mostly emails you've sent us. Write to support@photostr.io and we'll sort it out. If you live in the EU or the UK and aren't happy with our response, you can complain to your local data protection authority. In the UK, that's the Information Commissioner's Office.
Children
Photostr isn't meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, email us and we'll remove it.
Changes to this policy
If we change how Photostr handles data, we'll update this page and the date at the top. If we ever add a feature that uploads pictures, such as a cloud AI tool, it will be optional, and it will tell you clearly before and during the upload.
