Remove an object from a photo
Photostr can fill in the area behind something you do not want, such as a passer-by, a sign or a power line. The repair runs in your browser, so the photo is not uploaded.
Photostr is a free online Photoshop alternative that runs in your browser. There is no account to make, and your photos stay on your device.
The quick way
On the start screen, choose Remove an object and pick your photo. Photostr selects the Remove tool with a brush sized for the photo. Paint over the object, or draw a loop around it, and cover a little beyond its edges. When it finishes, hold Before to compare and use Download to save a JPEG.
In the editor
Pick the Remove tool (J) from the toolbar and brush over the object. For a cleaner fill on a bigger area, turn on the tool’s AI option. The first time, Photostr asks before downloading the model, which is about 200 MB and is kept on your device. It needs a recent browser that can use your computer’s graphics chip, such as current Chrome, Edge or Safari. Without it, the standard Remove tool still works.
Other ways to fix an area
- Spot Healing Brush (J) for small marks such as dust, spots and blemishes.
- Edit → Content-Aware Fill after making a selection, when you want to choose exactly which area is replaced.
- Clone Stamp (S) when you need to copy a specific texture by hand.
If the result looks wrong
Undo, then brush a little wider than the object, or do it in two smaller passes. Fills work best when the background around the object is simple, such as sky, grass or a wall. Busy patterns and straight lines running behind the object are harder and may need the Clone Stamp.
Questions
Is my photo uploaded to remove the object?
No. The Remove tool, including its AI option, runs on your device. Only the AI model itself is downloaded, once.
Do I need to make a selection first?
Not for the Remove tool: just brush over the object. Edit → Content-Aware Fill does need a selection.
Can I undo it later?
Use Edit → Undo straight away. To keep the original pixels safe for later, duplicate the layer before removing, or save a .pxed project.
